Uraga was prosperous as a port town for many years. It had become the base of foreign trade once at the begining of the Edo period.

In the middle of the Edo period, a Shogunate magistrate's office was established in Uraga and the ships going to and comming from Edo underwent inspection at this place, which made the town of Uraga greatly prosperous.

Uraga appeared on the historical front stage at the time of the Commodore Perry arrival in 1853, thereby Japan opened a country to foreign diplomatic and trade relationship.
